Biosphere Reserves in Mexico

The Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, situated at the eastern end of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, is a remarkable wetland ecosystem recognized by the Ramsar Convention for its exceptional ecological significance. This vast protected area encompasses diverse landscapes and habitats, serving as a vital sanctuary for numerous endangered species and a crucial stopover for migratory birds.

Nestled in the southeastern corner of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve stands as a remarkable gem in Mexico's network of protected natural areas. This mosaic of open water, seagrass beds, mangroves, sandy beaches, and vibrant coral reefs is considered one of the most outstanding marine sites in the region. Veracruz Coral Reef System National Park and the Sistema Arrecifal Biosphere Reserve comprise flats, islands, and reefs in the Gulf of Mexico on the inner part of the continental shelf. The area harbors resident, transitory and migrant fish, operating as a barrier against waves and storms.

The Volcán Tacaná Biosphere Reserve encompasses the Tacaná Volcano in Chiapas, on the Mexico-Guatemala border. The volcano is part of the Central America Volcanic Arc. It contains fragile ecosystems rich in wild flora and fauna of cultural, scientific, economic, and biological relevance.
